The Riga Radio and TV Tower stands on an island in the Daugava River in Riga, the capital of Latvia, and is the tallest tower in the European Union. At 368.5 metres it is the third tallest tower in Europe, after Moscow's Ostankino Tower and the Kyiv TV Tower. It was built between 1979 and 1989 with funding from the central Soviet government. It had a restaurant at 93 metres until 2006, and a public viewing platform at 97 metres looking over the city and the Gulf of Riga. It has been closed to visitors since 2019 for a large renovation project. You see a tall, slender tower on three slanting legs that meet high up, painted red and white, rising above the wooded riverbanks. It is visible from most of Riga, from the bridges it is reflected in the Daugava, and at sunset it stands out against an orange sky. It is about 3.4 km from central Riga in a straight line. Check before you go whether the viewing platform has reopened.
