An island on the Songhua River north of Jilin City, its name meaning «rime island», famed in winter for trees coated in thick white rime like flowers of ice, the sight known as «Jilin rime», one of China's most beautiful winter landscapes. It happens because the Fengman hydropower station upstream releases water warmer than the air, so the river stays unfrozen in the coldest days and the mist rising from it freezes on the branches of trees and willows along the banks; the best time to see it is from late December to late February, early in the morning between 7 and 9. Tickets cost about CNY 30 plus about 10 for the ferry, though some channels quote more, open from 6.30 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides; it is bitterly cold, so wear full winter clothing.
