The second of the great dragon islands in Komodo National Park and the closest to Labuan Bajo, home to many Komodo dragons among dry savanna hills and mangrove forests. Being closer, it is a popular choice for day trips and families. Boats dock in Loh Buaya bay, where a renovated ranger station with raised boardwalks lets you see dragons safely around the station, followed by a ranger-led walk on a short or longer trail climbing a hill over the bays. You may see monkeys, wild buffalo and birds. Komodo National Park fees for foreigners are a bundle (entry, ranger, activities) of several hundred thousand rupiah a day, and the rules change often, so check before your trip; the boat is chartered or booked as a tour. A ranger is compulsory, and dragons are dangerous despite their calm look. Come in the morning when dragons are more active and the heat lighter, with water, a hat and closed shoes. Rinca is usually combined with small islands for snorkelling on the same day.
