Imbassaí is a seaside village on the Linha Verde coastal road north of Salvador, in the municipality of Mata de São João, and has become a favourite with Salvador residents and visitors thanks to a rare scene where river and sea run side by side. Before the Imbassaí River meets the ocean it flows parallel to the beach, separated from the surf only by a strip of sand and dunes. Visitors can choose between swimming in the calm fresh water of the river, ideal for children, and crossing the sandbar to the open sea and its waves. The beach is reached on foot over a wooden bridge and a path through the trees, and simple stalls on the riverbank serve food and drinks. Buses and cars reach it from Salvador along the Linha Verde in about an hour and a half, and it makes a lovely stop on the way to Praia do Forte and the Costa do Sauípe.

Yes, the calm, shallow river suits them; take more care on the sea side.
