**The first of the five coming from La Spezia — one street descending a rock cleft to a small harbour** — and the largest by population. ⚠ **Its name comes from a river**: ***Rio Maggiore*, the greater stream** — ⚠ **and the stream is culverted today beneath the main street**, **so the village is built over its bed**. ✅ **Its plan is a cleft**: **tall narrow coloured houses** on both sides of a steep valley dropping to the sea, **with the main street falling** to a **small harbour** where boats sit on a stone slipway. ✅ **The "Path of Love" begins here**, running to Manarola — ⚠ **its status changes; check**. ⚠ **It is the easiest to reach** from La Spezia, ⚠ **so it is the first to fill**. ✅ **And sunset from the harbour rocks** is famous.

**Go against everyone's direction, start very early, and stay the night.** ⚠ **What most people do**: **arrive from La Spezia around 10:00**, **start at Riomaggiore** (the nearest), **and move north** — **so a single human wave travels one way all day**. ✅ **First answer — reverse it**: **take the train straight to Monterosso** (the furthest) **and start there**, **then move south** — **walking against the wave**, ⚠ **reaching each village before or after it**. ✅ **Second — timing**: **the villages are empty before 9:00 and after 18:00** — ⚠ **and the difference is not gradual but abrupt**: **Manarola at seven in the morning is another place entirely**. ✅ **Third — stay the night**: **most visitors are day trips** from La Spezia or even Florence; ⚠ **so anyone who stays owns the villages morning and evening**. ✅ **Fourth — the season**: ⚠ **July and August are the worst**; ✅ **May, June, September and October are far better**, and the sea is still warm in September. ✅ **Fifth — the boat**: **sea crossings between the villages** ✅ **give you a view the train cannot** (⚠ and are cancelled in swell).
