Empty islands
White sand, clear water.
A marine park on Flores' north coast made up of a group of small islands, said to number seventeen though there are really more, with white sand, clear turquoise water and rich coral reefs, far from Komodo's crowds. Boats take visitors on a day among the islands: swimming and snorkelling on colourful reefs, relaxing on empty sandy beaches, and visiting Ontoloe island, where thousands of huge fruit bats hang from the mangroves and fill the sky at sunset; large monitor lizards may be seen on some islands. There is a park fee, and the boat is hired whole at a price agreed for the day. Riung village is simple, with modest guesthouses. Allow a full day for the tour and stay a night in Riung. Bring food, water and sun cream, and agree which islands are included before setting off.
