Rodeio is a small town of about 13,000 people in the Itajaí Valley of Santa Catarina, at 88 metres near Blumenau and Pomerode, known for keeping the traditions of its founding immigrants from the Italian-speaking Tyrol. The first group of Tyrolean immigrants from the Trento region arrived in 1875, when it belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, followed by settlers from Veneto and Lombardy; they came at the request of Dr Blumenau after the German immigrants had struggled to adapt to the area. Today about 80% of its people descend from those settlers. Trentino cooking lives on: polenta with chicken and cassava, cheese and minestra, along with folk games such as mora, briscola and bocce, dances, songs and some of the Trentino dialect. It makes a quiet stop on a day through the Itajaí Valley and its European-style towns.
