Rose Hall is a plantation house in the Jamaican Georgian style east of Montego Bay, now run as a historic house museum. It is one of the best-known great houses in Jamaica, high on a hillside looking over the coast and the sea. The house had fallen into ruin by the 1960s and was then restored. The museum presents the history of the enslaved people of the estate and the legend of the White Witch, Annie Palmer, said to haunt the house. Researchers have questioned the legend, which seems to be a later invention. You see a two-storey house with a grey stone base and a white plastered upper floor with many evenly spaced windows. A double flight of stone steps rises to an open portico, green gardens and trees lie in front, and from the entrance a wide view opens over the sea. It is about 9 km from central Montego Bay in a straight line. Visits are by guided tour, and evening tours are offered.
