A growing waterfall
Tufa precipitates out of the water so the barriers grow over thousands of years.

A series of waterfalls on the Krka river inside the national park, consisting of a main fall of about twenty-five metres preceded by a stretch of stepped cascades known as the necklaces — dozens of small channels dropping over limestone across hundreds of metres. What forms these falls is tufa: rock that builds up when calcium salts precipitate out of the water onto moss and plants, so the rock barriers grow slowly over thousands of years and the water level rises behind them. The waterfalls here are a living, growing thing rather than a fixed shape. Around the fall stand historic stone watermills, some still operated as demonstrations — they ground grain for the region's villages. Roški is far quieter than the better-known Skradinski Buk falls in the same park, which is a good reason to choose it. The park is ticketed at prices that vary sharply between season and off-season, and swimming is restricted or forbidden in parts — check the current rules.

Krka National Park, on the Krka river
Plitvice is larger, more famous and UNESCO-listed, with sixteen terraced lakes, many waterfalls and long trails — it needs a full day and is very crowded. Krka is smaller and closer to the coast and can be reached by boat, with broader falls. Both work by the same tufa process. With one day from Zadar, Krka is more practical; Plitvice deserves a day of its own.
The rules have changed in recent years. Swimming was permitted at Skradinski Buk for decades and was then banned to protect the fragile tufa rock, which is damaged by contact. Check the current rules on the official site before going rather than relying on older information — this is among the points where visitors most often arrive with wrong expectations.
