Rugova Canyon is a deep river gorge that begins at the western edge of Peja and runs into the Albanian Alps near the border with Montenegro, cut by the Lumbardh of Peja between towering rock walls and thick forest. A winding mountain road follows its floor, linking the town with high villages and pastures and, beyond them, Montenegro. It is Kosovo's playground for the outdoors: hiking trails to lakes and peaks, rock walls for climbing, caves for explorers, and a via ferrata, an «iron path» fixed to the rock that lets walkers climb safely on cables. In summer its small roadside restaurants fill with families from town. The canyon is free and open; you can drive it or join a tour from Peja, while the via ferrata and climbing are done with licensed local outfitters who supply the gear and a guide. The road is narrow with many bends, so drive carefully, and it is much cooler at the top than in town.

You need not be an expert, but go with a licensed local outfitter who supplies the harness, helmet and a guide.
