Saas-Fee is the main village of the Saas Valley, a municipality in the Visp district of the canton of Valais in southern Switzerland, about 17 km northeast of Zermatt in a straight line, across the Mischabel range. The village sits on a high mountain plateau at 1,800 metres, surrounded by 13 peaks over 4,000 metres, the highest concentration in the Alps, earning it the nickname «Pearl of the Alps». It is a classic ski resort with well-preserved Swiss wooden architecture and a car-free centre. The nearby glaciers of the Dom and Allalinhorn allow skiing all year round. Dark wooden chalets with flower-hung balconies cluster in a green valley, overlooked by huge glaciers spilling from towering white peaks. In autumn the larch forests around the village turn gold and orange against the snow. Visitors arrive by bus from Visp or Saas-Grund, leave cars at the village entrance and get around on foot. They ride cable cars up to the heights and glaciers for skiing in winter and hiking in summer, and experienced climbers tackle the surrounding peaks.
