One of Bangkok's best-known family destinations since it opened in 1988, in the north-east of the city about an hour's drive from the centre. It has two parts: the open Safari Park, which cars and buses drive through among giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers and bears, and the Marine Park, explored on foot, with shows and animal encounters. The Marine Park runs shows throughout the day, best known a big spy-movie-style action show, plus sea lion, dolphin and bird shows, and a platform for feeding giraffes at head height, a favourite with children. Animal-welfare groups have criticised some of the animal shows, so families can choose which to attend. The combined ticket for both parks is about fifteen hundred baht per adult at the gate, often cheaper online, and it opens from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. There are several restaurants on site, so ask about halal options or bring snacks. Heat and humidity peak from March to May, and afternoon downpours are heavy from June to October. Allow a full day, starting with the Safari Park in the morning when the animals are most active, then moving on to the shows. A car with driver is the easiest way to get there.
