Saharna Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in a narrow green valley near the right bank of the Dniester, at the village of Saharna in north-eastern Moldova. A church with green domes sits among the trees, rocks with caves rise above it, and a small blue chapel on the hilltop looks over the valley. The monk Vartolomeu Ciungu founded the Holy Trinity Monastery in 1776. Higher in the rock is an older cave monastery of the Annunciation, restored in 1857. The monastery was closed in 1964 and reopened on 19 April 1991, and its summer church was restored between 1992 and 1998. From the village you go down into the valley and walk between the churches and gardens. Steps and a path climb to the caves and to the chapel on the hill, which has a wide view of the valley. By the monastery is a spring with a pool that visitors come to. This is a working monastery, so dress modestly and speak quietly. The monastery is 77 km in a straight line north of Chișinău and 36 km north of Orhei. Entry is free. The Țipova cave monastery is 10 km to the south, so you can visit both together. Wear good shoes for the climb.
