A golden-sand beach stretching some fourteen kilometres along the Mediterranean, one of the longest in Morocco, in the town of Saïdia, nicknamed the «Blue Pearl», in the country's far north-east near the Algerian border. The small town has grown into a large resort with hotels, golf courses and shopping centres, and a marina covering twenty-nine hectares with more than seven hundred berths. A natural area of marsh and woodland at the mouth of the Moulouya river surrounds it and shelters many birds, and the main beach is reached through a eucalyptus forest. Its water is calm and warm in summer and suits families, with water sports and horse rides on the sand, and every August the town holds a folk music festival. The climate is mild: the average high in August is about thirty-two degrees. The beach is free. It is busy in July and August with families from Morocco and abroad, while June and September are calmer. The nearest airport is Oujda-Angads, about an hour's drive away, and the Zegzel gorges in the Beni Snassen mountains make an easy excursion.
