Canada's largest church, standing on the northwest slope of Mount Royal, with a huge green copper dome among the largest in the world, rising above Montreal's western neighbourhoods and visible from afar. It began as a small wooden chapel built in 1904 by a humble monk named Brother André, who became known among the people for praying for the sick, and visitors flocked to him until the site became a major shrine; the present building was completed in the 1960s. Visitors climb a long flight of steps from the square, and its terrace gives a wide view over the city. Inside are the vast dome hall, an old chapel, a museum on the site's history and gardens on the slope. Entry to the church is free, and some exhibitions and activities charge. It is an active shrine visited by pilgrims, so keep quiet and dress modestly.
