Saint Sophia Cathedral is an architectural monument of Kyivan Rus in central Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. It is one of the city's best-known landmarks and the first Ukrainian site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the Pechersk Lavra, and today it is a museum. It was built in the 11th century under Yaroslav the Wise, around the same time as the Golden Gate. Besides the cathedral, the complex includes a bell tower, the Metropolitan's House and other buildings. Inside it is known for its old mosaics and frescoes, and its outside was later reshaped in the Baroque style. From outside you see a white cathedral with many green domes and a gold dome in the middle, and a tall white tiered bell tower with a gold dome. A garden with trees and red paths surrounds it, and from the tower you see the roofs and domes of the city around. It is about 700 metres from Independence Square in a straight line, and about half a kilometre from the Golden Gate. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Kyiv, and opening can change at short notice, so read the current advice before any planning.
