An old shopping street in Otaru lined with stone and wooden buildings from the city's heyday as a port and centre of trade and finance in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, now shops for glass, sweets and souvenirs. The street is known for blown-glass shops and workshops, including Kitaichi Glass, a Venetian-style glass art museum in a grand Italianate building, and Otaru's well-known sweet shops. At the end of the street, at the Märchen crossroads, the Music Box Museum occupies a Meiji-era stone building; it is both a shop and a showroom, with about 25,000 music boxes, and outside stands a steam clock that puffs steam and plays a tune. Walking is free, and the Music Box Museum is free to enter and opens 9:00-18:00, to 19:00 on some summer days, per visitor guides. The street is a few minutes' walk from Minami-Otaru Station and pairs easily with the nearby canal.
