A pretty waterfall in the central mountains, dropping about twenty-five metres between two tall rocks into an emerald pool near Jarabacoa, whose Taíno name means «land of waters» for the many rivers and falls in its green mountain valley. Visitors reach it by a short dirt road from town, then an easy path along the Baiguate River between big boulders and trees, past red and grey rock walls, in about a quarter of an hour from the car park. In the pool some visitors swim in the cool water while others sit on the rocks. It is quiet on weekdays and busy with local families on holidays. Jarabacoa is a mountain base with a mild, fresh climate, where Dominicans escape the coastal heat, offering rafting on the Yaque del Norte river and forest hikes. Rocks are slippery and water rises fast after rain, so follow the guides and do not swim when the current is strong. The mountains are much cooler than the coast, especially at night, so bring a jacket.
