Salto Morato Nature Reserve is a private natural heritage reserve in Guaraqueçaba on the north coast of Paraná, covering some 2,250 hectares of Atlantic Forest and protecting the home of many endemic bird species found only in these forests. The reserve spans every type of Atlantic Forest, from lowland to montane, and landscapes of rare beauty such as the Garacuí and Morato mountains and the Salto Morato waterfall, about 120 metres high. Some 646 species of vascular plants, 93 mammals and 325 birds have been recorded here, along with reptiles and amphibians. It has a visitor centre, interpretive trails, kiosks, a campsite and a research centre. Visitors come to walk to the waterfall, see the giant fig tree whose roots wrap over the rocks by a stream, and swim in the pools. Pets are not allowed. Getting there is a fairly long trip on dirt roads, so check opening times before going.
