Salto São João is a waterfall on the São João River in Paraná, dropping about 84 metres into a cleft between two mountains on the edge of the Serra da Esperança, between Guarapuava and Prudentópolis, surrounded by dense native trees. The fall lies within the São João State Natural Monument, managed jointly by Paraná's Water and Land Institute and the town of Prudentópolis, with walking trails and a panoramic lookout over the fall and the gorge the river cuts through the mountain on its way towards the BR-277. Prudentópolis is known as the «land of the giant waterfalls», with more than a hundred falls catalogued, and Salto São João is one of the easiest to reach and most visited. The town itself has deep Ukrainian roots: thousands of Ukrainian immigrants settled here in the late nineteenth century, and their language, traditions and food are still very much alive.
