Saltos del Laja is a group of waterfalls on the Laja River in south-central Chile, beside the old Pan-American Highway between the cities of Los Ángeles and Chillán. It is one of the country's best-known falls, and travellers between north and south stop here. There are four horseshoe-shaped falls, one on each arm of the river. The tallest, the easternmost, is 35 metres high, and the western falls about 20 metres. Below the falls the river has cut a narrow canyon, and in summer the flow drops sharply because the river is used for irrigation and power. You see a wide curtain of white water pouring over a curved rock ledge, throwing up thick spray that glitters in the sun. Below are dark volcanic rocks and a roaring river in the canyon, poplars and gum trees surround the site, and bridges and wooden walkways serve as lookouts. It is about 28 km from the city of Los Ángeles in a straight line. The best show is in winter and spring, when the water is high.
