The best-known dunes of the Thar Desert, spreading near the village of Sam about 45 km west of Jaisalmer on the edge of the Desert National Park, with golden, rolling sand hills stretching to the horizon. Visitors come especially before sunset to ride camels or 4x4s among the dunes and sit on their crests to watch the sun go down behind the sand, a magical sight, and many spend the evening at the desert camps. The camps around the dunes offer Rajasthani folk music and dance by the fire, a traditional dinner and tents for the night under a clear desert sky full of stars, and many return to the dunes at sunrise. Reaching the dunes is free, while camel rides, jeep tours and camps have their own prices, so agree on them in advance. November to February is best; summer is extremely hot.
