Sam Son is northern Vietnam's best-known beach and its busiest in summer, about 16 kilometres east of Thanh Hoa city and 164 kilometres from Hanoi, roughly two and a half hours by car. The French began coming here for the summer in 1906, which makes it one of the oldest resorts of Indochina, and the town marked a hundred years of tourism in 2006. The beach runs for about six kilometres from the mouth of the Lach Hoi to the foot of Truong Le mountain, with wide flat sand, water that stays shallow a long way out, and stronger waves than in sheltered bays. On Truong Le mountain stand the famous Hon Trong Mai rocks, with a view along the whole coast. At the height of summer, June to August, the beach and hotels are packed, especially at weekends, and winter is too cold for swimming. Pick weekdays in late spring or early autumn, and ask the price of seafood before you order.
