San Antonio de Areco is a quiet town in northern Buenos Aires province on the bank of the Areco river, founded in 1730 and declared a city of national historic interest. It is the heartland of gaucho tradition, the horsemen of the Argentine plains, and home of Don Segundo Sombra, hero of Ricardo Güiraldes' famous novel of gaucho life. Its streets have low colonial houses and old general stores, workshops of silversmiths, leatherworkers and weavers, and an old bridge over the river among meadows. On the edge of town the Ricardo Güiraldes Gaucho Museum, in a broad park, shows gaucho tools, dress and the story of the novel. Every November the town holds Tradition Day, a big celebration of horses, music and country dress. Wandering the town is free; the museum charges a small fee and is free on Mondays. It makes a day trip from Buenos Aires by bus or car in about two hours.
