San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, central Italy, about 28 km northwest of Siena and 38 km southwest of Florence in a straight line. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its medieval architecture and for keeping about a dozen of its old tower houses, which with the hilltop setting and encircling walls form an unforgettable skyline. Within the walls stand well-preserved Romanesque and Gothic buildings, among them the town hall. Slender square stone towers rise above the town's red roofs, surrounded by green Tuscan hills of vineyards and cypresses. Inside, the triangular Piazza della Cisterna opens out around its old stone well, ringed by medieval stone houses. Visitors enter through the gates in the walls, stroll the two main streets and climb the tallest tower, the Torre Grossa, for a view over the countryside. The town is known for its Vernaccia white wine and its gelato, and evenings are quieter after the day-trippers leave.
