Sanbangsan is a huge dome-shaped rock mountain rising abruptly from the coastal plain in southwest Jeju, with sheer grey walls, surrounded by colourful fields, small villages and the blue sea. It is a lava dome of trachyte, 395 m high and about 1,200 m across, with no crater at the top, unlike most of Jeju's volcanic hills. Its name means «mountain with a room», after the Sanbanggul cave on its slope. It is part of the Jeju Island UNESCO Global Geopark and one of the island's best-known sights, with Hallasan and Seongsan Ilchulbong. You climb steps to the cave on its slope for the view over the sea, then go down to the nearby Yongmeori coast with its layered rocks, and walk Sagye Beach with the mountain behind. It is about 35 km in a straight line southwest of Jeju City. The summit itself is closed to protect its nature.
