Sandbanks Provincial Park lies on Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County, Ontario, about 13 km southwest of the town of Picton in a straight line. It is counted among the best sandy beaches in Ontario. The park was established in 1970, covers about 1,551 hectares and is open all year. It holds the largest bay-mouth barrier dune system in the world, built by currents flowing west to east along the lake's northern shore. The barrier runs for about 8 km, and some dunes reach 25 metres high. In the 19th century the sand drifted inland far enough to bury a whole road. Soft golden dunes stretch between the big lake and West Lake, the wind draws fine ripples across them, and beach grass and lone poplars grow on the slopes. Elsewhere a flat limestone shore takes the breaking waves. People come to swim, camp, cycle, fish and watch birds, and there are long sandy beaches and trails through the dunes. It gets very busy on summer weekends, so plan ahead. Sunset over the dunes is the finest time.
