Beijing's liveliest district for shopping and nightlife, in Chaoyang, named for lying three li, about 1.5 km, from the old Dongzhimen gate. Chosen in the late 1950s as a new embassy quarter, it filled with bars and restaurants after the 1980s and is now one of the city's busiest areas for shopping, dining and entertainment. Its heart is Taikoo Li Sanlitun, an open-air shopping complex of nineteen low-rise buildings completed in 2008–2009, with bright glass façades and international brand stores, among them a large Adidas store, around squares that fill with people in the evening. The streets are free to wander at any hour; the shops open from late morning into the evening, and the back streets come alive after dark. Many venues here serve alcohol; for halal food, Niujie in south-west Beijing has many Hui Muslim restaurants.
