**A vast basilica standing alone in a field outside the city, its apse a green mosaic meadow of sheep and trees** — 8 km south of Ravenna. It was consecrated in **549**, **and stood in the port of Classe** — Ravenna's naval harbour, home to the Adriatic fleet. ⚠ **Then the sea withdrew and the harbour silted up** — **leaving the church alone in farmland**, with the sea kilometres away. ✅ **Its apse is unlike every other mosaic in Ravenna**: **not gold but green** — **a meadow of trees, rocks, birds and twelve sheep**, with a **jewelled cross** at its centre and Saint Apollinaris below with his hands raised. ✅ **Two ranks of marble columns** run down an enormous, almost empty space. ⚠ **You need a car or a bus.**

**Because its subject is different: not a display of heaven but a symbolic earthly paradise.** ✅ **The rule about gold**: **a gold ground in Byzantine art is not a background but a non-place** — **a divine space outside time and location**. **It is used when the figure is to be placed in heaven itself** — as in San Vitale's vault and the processions of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. ✅ **What was done here**: **the apse depicts a real green meadow** — grass, rocks, shrubs, birds and a clouded sky; **with twelve sheep** (the apostles) **and Saint Apollinaris** as shepherd of his flock. ⚠ **The symbolic reading**: **this is «paradise» in its old sense — a garden**, **and the Church shepherding its flock**; **and the jewelled cross at the centre in a starred disc** represents the Transfiguration. ✅ **The visual effect is entirely different**: **gold dazzles and holds you off**, ⚠ **green draws you in and settles you** — **so the scene feels like a place you could enter** rather than a vision. ✅ **There is a practical reason too**: **the apse is low and close** unlike the high domes — **so the plant and animal detail is meant to be seen near to**, and it is painted precisely enough to identify species.
