Among grass and trees.
Santa María la Mayor is one of the four Jesuit missions in Argentina that UNESCO listed as World Heritage in 1984, with San Ignacio Miní, Santa Ana and Loreto, and the most remote and least visited of them, out in the countryside near the Uruguay river southeast of Posadas. Its red stone walls show among trees and grass in a quiet, secluded setting, with the remains of the square, communal buildings and family houses. Visitors are often alone among the ruins, far from San Ignacio's crowds. The single missions ticket is valid here within 15 days, and the site opens daily 07:30-18:00. The drive from Posadas is long, so it suits anyone completing all four missions.
