Santa Maria Madalena is a small hill town of about ten thousand people in Rio de Janeiro state, at 615 metres; the municipality includes part of the Desengano State Park, Rio de Janeiro's oldest state park, with mountains, rocky peaks and Atlantic forest. The area began to be explored around 1840, and the town grew in the coffee era with the railway. It is one of 173 Brazilian municipalities included in the historic towns development programme, and in 2009 the national heritage institute began the process of protecting its historic centre, among whose buildings is the old railway station of 1890. Visitors come for its quiet streets of old houses, the park's trails and waterfalls, and climbing and hiking towards the Desengano peak. It makes a different outing away from the coast for anyone staying in Macaé or Nova Friburgo.
