A large pier at the foot of Colorado Avenue in the seaside city of Santa Monica, west of Los Angeles, with a small amusement park, food stands, restaurants and places to fish and stroll over the Pacific Ocean. It is made up of two joined piers: the long Municipal Pier, opened in 1909, and the wide Pleasure Pier, built in 1916, which holds an original 1920s carousel, along with a famous sign marking the end of historic Route 66. Its best-known sight is the solar-powered Pacific Park Ferris wheel, which lights up at night in changing colours and can be seen from afar, along with rides, a small aquarium and street performers, while anglers fish from its western end. The pier is free to enter, and rides cost extra. Sunset over the ocean is the best time, and from here you can walk the wide beach or rent a bike to neighbouring Venice.
