Santana do Riacho is a small municipality of about 5,700 people in central Minas Gerais, some 130 kilometres north of Belo Horizonte, home to the tourist district of Serra do Cipó and the entrance to the national park of that name, as well as the mountain village of Lapinha da Serra. Its roots go back to colonial times: local lore says a bandeirante stopped to rest by a stream, so the place was first called Riacho Fundo, «deep stream», and a small farming village grew around it. Visitors come for the national park with its waterfalls, rivers and rocky grasslands, for the quiet village of Lapinha da Serra by a small lake and the mountain trails around it, and for the pousadas and restaurants of the Serra do Cipó district on the MG-010 road. The best time to visit is the dry season.
