Santo Amaro da Imperatriz is a town of about 27,000 people in Greater Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, on the BR-282 towards the hills, known for its hot springs, among the first thermal resorts in Brazil. Hunters found the hot spring in 1813, and the imperial government sent guards to protect it. On 18 March 1818 King João VI ordered a hospital built at the springs, the first law creating a thermal resort in Brazil. In October 1845 Emperor Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina visited, and she had a building with rooms and baths put up for visitors; the town's name comes from her title. Visitors come today for the hot baths of Caldas da Imperatriz and their hotels, and for rafting on the Cubatão River; the municipality includes part of the Serra do Tabuleiro State Park with its forests and mountains.
