Santo Antônio de Lisboa is a historic village on the west coast of Santa Catarina Island, founded by immigrants from the Portuguese Azores, its parish created by royal decree on 26 October 1751. It keeps its Azorean architecture: small white houses with coloured doors and windows, the white church of Our Lady of Needs on the square, and a number of houses listed as heritage. The village looks over the North Bay between island and mainland, and townspeople come at weekends for family lunches in the seafood restaurants lined up along the water, for the area is one of Brazil's biggest oyster-farming centres. A short promenade runs along the shore. The best time to come is late in the day, as the sun sets over the bay and the mountains on the mainland opposite. It pairs well with the neighbouring village of Sambaqui on the same coast road.
