São Jorge is a small village of about 250 people at the entrance to Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, in Alto Paraíso de Goiás, about 220 km north of Brasília. It was founded by prospectors who came for the quartz running in deep veins under the area, and it boomed with crystal mining in the 1950s and 1960s, reaching three thousand people, most of them from the north-east. Today it lives from park visitors, a mix of artists, country people and followers of alternative lifestyles, with restaurants, guesthouses, craft shops and campsites. One of the most visited spots nearby is the Cachoeira da Rodoviária, «Bus Station Falls», named because miners' buses once stopped there. It is the closest base to the park's main trails and to the Cachoeira do Segredo, so staying here saves long drives.
