São José do Norte is a town of about 26,000 people in the far south of Rio Grande do Sul, on a sand spit between the Atlantic and the Lagoa dos Patos, directly across the lagoon's outlet channel from the city of Rio Grande and reached by boat. In 1841 Emperor Pedro II gave it the title «Very Heroic» for the bravery of its garrison during the Ragamuffin War, and the title is still its motto and on the municipal coat of arms. It lives from farming, cattle and fishing. Its sights include the east breakwater at the lagoon mouth, the Barra lighthouse, the historic Sobrado Gibbon, the Solar dos Imperadores and Mar Grosso beach on the ocean. The short boat ride from Rio Grande is part of the fun.
