São Lourenço do Sul is a town of about 43,000 people on the west shore of the great Lagoa dos Patos in Rio Grande do Sul, a short drive from Pelotas, and counted among the prettiest towns of the «Costa Doce», the lagoon's freshwater shore. It was settled by German immigrants, most of them Pomeranians, and many of its people still descend from them and keep their traditions in the countryside. Alongside farming and fishing, tourism has become important, with hotels, pousadas, cabins and campsites for summer visitors from across Brazil. Visitors come in summer for the calm freshwater beaches of the lagoon, and for those who want the countryside, the Caminho Pomerano is a route through farms and villages to meet the settlers' culture and cooking.
