São Miguel do Gostoso is a small beach town of about ten thousand people on the north coast of Rio Grande do Norte, some ninety kilometres north of Natal, and has become one of Brazil's best-known kitesurfing spots. For most of the year strong winds blow parallel to the coast, which lowers the risk of being carried away from the shore, and the water stays warm even in winter, so kitesurf schools and clubs fill the town and draw riders from around the world. It also hosts the Gostoso Film Festival, which screens films in the open air on the beach. The town split from Touros in 1993, and its residents chose the present name in a 2000 referendum; local lore says it comes from one Manoel Gostoso, who lodged travelling salesmen and entertained them with stories. On Praia do Marco stands a replica of a Portuguese boundary stone from 1501. Its restaurants mostly open in the evening, especially on Rua da Xepa.
