Saquarema is a coastal town of about ninety thousand people in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro state, some 73 kilometres east of Rio, which surfers call Brazil's «national surf capital» for the size and quality of its waves. Surf festivals began here in the 1970s, it hosted the Brazilian leg of the World Surf League until 2002, and it returned to the world tour in 2017. Contests are held at Itaúna beach, nicknamed the «Maracanã of Brazilian surfing». In 1976 it hosted the famous «Som, Sol & Surf» music festival. Between the ocean and the coastal Saquarema lagoon lie long beaches, dunes and viewpoints; the Tupinambá lived here before Europeans. It is a relatively quiet choice for anyone who wants the sea away from the crowds of Cabo Frio and Búzios.
