Saut-Mathurine is Haiti's largest waterfall, in green hills near the town of Camp-Perrin in the south. White water pours off a plant-covered rock face into a wide green-turquoise pool, with forest all around. The falls are fed by the Cavaillon River, which runs hard in the rainy season, making them wider and stronger. The area is one of farming villages and hills, and Pic Macaya National Park, one of the last large mountain forests in Haiti, is close by. You go down to the pool, swim in its cool water and sit on the rocks to watch the falls up close. The pool is a well-known swimming spot for local people. The waterfall is about 20 km in a straight line northwest of Les Cayes, about 40 minutes by car. Beware of strong currents near the falls, especially in the rainy season, wear non-slip shoes and bring insect repellent. January to March is the most pleasant time. The UK advises against all travel to Haiti because of the security situation, so check current advice before you go.
