The source of Slovenia's greatest river: the Savica waterfall bursts from an A-shaped rock 78 metres high at the end of the Bohinj valley, its water from the glacial lakes above appearing suddenly out of the mountain — the source of the Sava that crosses Slovenia and four countries to the Danube. The poet Prešeren immortalised it in his epic "The Baptism at the Savica". Reach it by a stone path from the Ukanc car park climbing half an hour on some 500 steps through forest to a viewing platform facing the fall and its spray. The road passes Lake Bohinj's western end and the Vogel cable-car station, so all three fit one day. Spring is strongest with snowmelt, autumn coloured; winter sometimes closes the path for ice.
