A mountain park in the Western Tian Shan on the Uzbek border, starting about 30 km southeast of Shymkent, with the Aksu-Zhabagly reserve to the northeast and Uzbekistan's Ugam-Chatkal park across the border. It is known for juniper forests, wild fruit and nut trees and a great range of plants from steppe to high mountain. Its name comes from the historic town of Sayram and the Ugam range. Green valleys, clear mountain rivers and waterfalls run through it; among its best-known spots is the turquoise Makpal lake among the peaks, with trails for walking and horse riding and small villages with guesthouses and campsites. Entry is about 500 tenge per person a day, paid at the gate, per visitor guides. The roads inside are mountain tracks, so go with a local driver or a tour; late spring and summer are the best seasons.
