Schaan is the largest municipality in Liechtenstein by population, north of the capital Vaduz, covering 26.92 square kilometres including mountains and forest. It is an important transport and industrial hub with a wide mountain view, a practical place to rest or to begin walks and trips between villages. Finds show it has been inhabited for over 6,000 years. The Romans conquered the area in 15 BC and built a military road from Milan to Bregenz, with settlements growing along it. In 1887 two Roman legionaries' helmets were found buried nearby. The most important Roman building is the fort, whose remains show by St. Peter's Church. At the town's edge runs the Rhine embankment, with a long path for walking and cycling and a broad view of the Swiss mountains. In the centre a long stair climbs towards the big parish church among the trees, a modern bus station glows with colour at night, and white houses stand before sharp mountains, along with an old yellow house in a garden. It is about 3 km in a straight line from Vaduz and serves as the country's bus hub, with a railway passing through, making it easy to reach from Switzerland and Austria. Combine your visit with the nearby Roman Fort. The embankment path suits a morning walk, so bring a hat. Respect private property and watch for bicycles on the path.
