The Schmitten is Zell am See's mother balcony: two thousand metres directly over the town, its cable car at the street's end — the summit opening the famous thirty-three-thousander view: the Hohe Tauern as southern wall and the emerald lake as the town's shoe complete below — Zell's first canvas, the one Austria markets itself with. Its summer is a family kingdom: level panorama trails, the wooden trolley carts, the little dragon Schmidolin path for the young, and paragliders launching from its platforms as the standing afternoon show — its winter the town's classic skiing. It is the easy mountain against the Kitzsteinhorn's legendary one: nearer, cheaper, warmer — and for the lake view, without any rival at all.
