Schwerin Castle is a 19th-century palace on an island in the main lake of Schwerin, capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northern Germany, about 94 km east of Hamburg and 181 km northwest of Berlin in a straight line. For centuries the site was the seat of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg, though little of the older castle survived its 19th-century rebuilding in historicist style. Today parts of it house the state parliament, and others the palace museum, a restaurant and cultural events, including open-air opera. The golden palace, with its many towers and domes, one of them gilded, rises above the water, surrounded by a formal garden of flower beds, clipped trees and statues. A stone bridge links it to the city, and from the shore it looks like a fairy-tale palace floating on the lake. Visitors tour the ornate museum rooms and walk the palace garden and the neighbouring island garden. Excursion boats cruise the lake and give the finest view of the palace, and Schwerin's old town is a short walk away.
