Scilla is a town in Calabria, southern Italy, part of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, at the northern end of the Strait of Messina, about 17 km north of Reggio Calabria in a straight line. It is the traditional home of the sea monster Scylla of Greek mythology. The town has two parts: the centre up on the hill and Marina di Scilla on the beachfront, with hotels and restaurants. Its beach is the first place north of Reggio Calabria where the water is not cooled by the strait's currents. The seaside quarter of Chianalea is listed among «The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy», and Ruffo Castle stands on the rock between the beach and the quarter. Chianalea's old houses press right up to the water's edge, linked by narrow lanes and stairs down to the sea, with fishing boats tied by their doors. Ruffo Castle stands on a high rocky headland between the quarter and the sandy beach, and the clear blue sea sparkles with the coast of Sicily on the horizon. Visitors wander the lanes of Chianalea, eat local swordfish in restaurants on the water, climb to the castle for views over the strait and swim at Marina beach. Sunset over the sea and Sicily is a highlight.
