Scotts Head is a green rocky headland reaching out from the south-west tip of Dominica, joined to the land by a narrow strip of pebbles, with a small fishing village of the same name. On one side lies the calm Caribbean Sea and on the other the Atlantic Ocean, so you see both seas at once. The headland is the only tied island in the Caribbean. Its Kalinago name is Cachacrou, meaning that which is being eaten by the sea. On top are a small lighthouse and the remains of an 18th-century gun battery. In front of it lies Soufrière Bay, a marine reserve for diving and snorkelling. The Waitukubuli National Trail, the longest hiking trail in the Caribbean at 185 km, starts here. You walk the narrow strip between the two seas, then climb a short path to the top of the headland. From above you see Soufrière Bay, the green mountains and the village with its painted boats. The village celebrates the feast of Saint Peter every June or July. The headland is 10 km in a straight line south of Roseau. It is open and free. The current is strong on the Atlantic side, so swim only on the calm side, and the path to the top is slippery.
