The Sea Cliff Bridge carries the coastal Lawrence Hargrave Drive along the face of the Illawarra escarpment in New South Wales, between the villages of Coalcliff and Clifton, about 21 km north of Wollongong and 48 km south of Sydney in a straight line. It replaced a section of road closed permanently in August 2003 because of regular rockfalls, the only road directly linking several coastal villages with Wollongong's northern suburbs. Completed in 2005 at a cost of A$52 million, it and the adjoining bridge run 450 metres over the Tasman Sea, up to 70 metres out from the old road line. It was named by an eleven-year-old pupil who won a school naming competition. The curving bridge sweeps over the water hard against a towering, forested sandstone cliff, with ocean waves breaking on the rocks below. From its footpath the view opens along the coast to the north and south. Visitors walk the bridge's footpath and stop at nearby lookouts such as Stanwell Tops. It makes a stop on the Grand Pacific Drive coastal route from Sydney.
