The Sea to Sky Gondola is a privately owned recreational lift south of Squamish, on Highway 99 between Vancouver and Whistler. It looks over the blue-green waters of Howe Sound, and most of the area lies in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, making it an easy stop on this scenic road. Work on the lower base began in April 2013, after staff went to Doppelmayr's headquarters in Austria to choose the lift and to Switzerland for the cabins. The upper platform sits on the slopes of Mount Habrich, 885 m above sea level, and forms an open mountain recreation area. At the top you find cafes, a lodge, walking trails and the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, strung between two platforms with broad views of forest and Sky Pilot Mountain. A deck juts over the cliff above Howe Sound and its peaks. The turquoise water opens up below you during the ride itself. It is 2.9 km in a straight line from Squamish and works as a short trip or a stop on the way to Whistler. The weather can differ a great deal between bottom and top, so bring a jacket and choose a clear day for the view. Hours change with the season, so check the site. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk.
